Case Study: 340 TB EMC SourceOne
    Migration to Expireon

    Executive Summary

This case study examines how a global financial services organization faced the challenge of retiring its aging EMC SourceOne journal archive, which contained over 340 terabytes of business-critical data. With regulatory compliance at the forefront, the company needed an efficient and scalable solution to evaluate, migrate, and manage its vast data repository while reducing long-term storage costs. Cloudficient’s Expireon provided the ideal platform, enabling rapid data onboarding, intelligent information governance, and provided them with the ideal platform where they could review their data.

Expireon’s advanced capabilities allowed the organization to classify and retain critical records while expiring redundant data, significantly reducing the migration footprint. The successful implementation resulted in the retirement.

    The Challenges

    Legacy Archive Retirement

Retiring a legacy journal archive with over 340 Tb in EMC SourceOne, is a substantial undertaking due to both its overall size and the length of time that the customer has been using the solution. Extracting the data into a future system will also certainly increase the overall size of the data footprint.

Decommissioning the now end of support EMC SourceOne requires a strategic approach because it involves extracting and relocating huge amounts of business critical data for this highly regulated customer.

    Onboarding Speed

With a large volume of data to migrate it’s critical that it’s migrated as quickly as possible, otherwise the project would likely run for multiple years – something that this customer would find unacceptable. Rapid data onboarding would enable this customer to retire their legacy archive solution more quickly. But of course, it’s not just about the overall speed, it’s the robustness of an extremely low error rate as well as giving the customer autonomy of their data, storing it in its native format without additional costs to extract or access the data.

    Assistance With Data Review

This customer ultimately wants to place relevant business data into a third-party cloud environment, but the legacy journal archive data was considered a ‘black box’. It is extremely difficult to find relevant (or irrelevant) data in the source archive.
The customer needed a way to be able to quickly find relevant custodian related data and have that data ready to be added to a third-party solution. Likewise, the customer wanted to expire any data that was no longer relevant – reducing the amount of data that would need to be transferred into the final target system.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

This customer realized that they didn't need to keep all of their historical data. They needed a platform that could migrate the data quickly and give the ability to review it easily:

    Expireon fitted the bill, perfectly!

    Cloudficient Solution

Cloudficient implemented a comprehensive strategy using Expireon, our next generation information governance platform.

    Proof of Concept

This customer undertook an extensive Proof of Concept (PoC), to ensure that the data could be onboarded as rapidly as claimed, and that they would be able to perform the necessary reviews to identify the data that should be expired, and the data which should be kept.

The POC also allowed the customer to become familiar with the user interface that their in-house teams would be using to review custodian-based data.

Finding The Right Data To Migrate

The 340 Tb of EMC SourceOne data became over 1.2 Petabytes of data when it was put back in its native format in Expireon. This was expected but further emphasised one of the main reasons that customer wanted to use Expireon - they don't want to have to migrate all data to a third-party cloud service because of the time and costs involved.

The Expireon solution interface enables this customer to quickly locate custodian related data and to decide the critical element of whether the data can be expired, or whether it can be extracted and placed in another third-party system.
